All, welcome back for the new semester, or welcome for the first time if
you are new. This is a heads up about the CCGS Annual Kickoff Bar-B-Q
which will take place next Wednesday evening--see the attachment. This
is totally free to students (both grads and undergrads)--you simply have
to send an RSVP to Allison Corcoran (her contact details below). Note
that in Allison's message below, and the attachment, it does not
specifically say that students are free, but yes, they are--I have
exchanged an e-mail with Allison to confirm it.

This is a great place to meet many of the folks from the various
companies downtown that are involved in the oil and gas business. Plus,
it is undeniably clear that the CCGS absolutely loves students!
Really! As many of you who have been there already know they often ask
students to stand for a round of applause--just for being students! And
besides sponsoring the monthly luncheons for students, they offer two
annual calls for scholarships, which have been *really* helpful for our
students. So for a couple of these reasons, it's good to show your face!

Let me also propose something new for this year. The CCGS has been
extraordinarily generous and gracious with our students through the
years so why don't we try to contribute back given our speciality? In
particular, one of the things that is really important to the CCGS is
outreach, education, and spreading the word to younger generations about
the endlessly fascinating field of geosciences. They have done a
verifiable boatload for the grade schools and public libraries in the
community via their Maps in Schools, Bones in Schools, and Boulders in
Schools programs. Much of this was spearheaded by the late Owen
Hopkins, and indeed, if you visit the CC public library named after him
(http://www.cclibraries.com/index.php/branches/northwest), you'll see an
example of one of the beautiful outreach projects they did. It hosts the
complete front quarter of a Columbian mammoth--it is impressively
massive when you stand next to it, and it's worth a visit!

Anyway, maybe the Geology Club, or simply a group of motivated
individuals, would be interested in helping to move this outreach
forward? I don't have any specific suggestions about what to do, but
maybe we can brainstorm and also get in touch with CCGeo Outreach folks,
who might be looking for a hand with something?

Anyway, we hope to see you at the Kickoff Bar-B-Q next Wednesday!

Mark
