TITLE:
STREAMLINING ACCESS CONTROL: AN ATTRIBUTE-BASED AUTO-PROVISIONING STUDY
ABSTRACT:
Ensuring that employees have appropriate access to the data they need presents a number of
challenges, especially in organizations that handle sensitive records such as FERPA-, HIPAA-, and
PCI-regulated data. This thesis presents a practical methodology for using role-based attributes to
manage such access automatically, reducing administrative overhead while improving transparency
to data owners. Using Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi as a case study, this thesis follows
a real-world implementation that replaced the existing electronic forms approval process for areas
that agreed to collaborate on this initiative. Following an eight-phase model, access groups
were identified and selected for a pilot implementation. Policies were configured for automated
provisioning and revocation through IAM workflows. This implementation uses just two stable
role-based attributes (administrative location and position ID), but any number of attributes can be
added for more granular control. This solution reduces the bottlenecks associated with redundant
form-based access requests, ensures better visibility for data owners, and mitigates problems such
as privilege creep and approval fatigue. While the solution does utilize software and groups specific
to TAMU-CC, the model is intentionally general and can be adapted to fit organizations of any size.
