September 25, 2007, Texas A&M University-Kingsville
Conference Highlights: National Institutes of Health Annual Membership
Meeting, Election of Officers
Texas A&M University-Kingsville will be the site of the next grant
conference to be held in conjunction with the USDA Training Seminar and
the Annual Business Meeting of the Consortium. On September 25th the
focus will be on the National Institutes of Health. TAMUK is the home
of the National Toxins Research Center. This center has been extremely
successful in receiving federal funding, including NIH funds. The
Regents Professor and Director of the NTRC, Dr. John Perez, will be
speaking and giving his wonderful insight on how he went from a small
lab to being world renown. He will also give a tour of his facilities.
Other NIH grantees will be asked to talk and the National Institutes of
Health will be presenting in the afternoon. Come take advantage of this
opportunity to learn how to be successful with NIH from the ground up.
You will have the opportunity to network with other HSI and provide
guidance on the future direction of the Texas Hispanic Serving
Institutions Consortium.
The USDA Training Seminar will be held September 26-27 and is open to
students and faculty from member institutions. We are encouraging
members to bring as many students as possible to learn more about the
USDA and how the agency works. This will be a "hands-on" experience
that will include field trips to work sites. Contact Jan Robinson to
make travel arrangements for the seminar and to register
(jan.melendez at laredo.edu). The consortium has travel funds available for
qualifying institutions.
The consortium will also hold its annual business meeting and elect a
new member to the Executive Council. If you are interested in being a
member of the council, please contact Jan Robinson.
