The style of dancing we now call Belly Dance, or raks sharqi, can trace its history back to Mesopotamia, over 6000 years ago. These dances originated as fertility and celebratory dances; performed for the most festive occasions usually by women for groups of other women. These dances spread and soon each region and village had developed its own style. Today belly dancing is enjoyed worldwide and is taught in almost every country.

Many women today in the U.S. and Europe approach belly dance as a tool for empowerment and strengthening of the body, mind, and spirit. Issues of body-image, self-esteem, healing from sexual violation, sisterhood, and self-authentication are regularly addressed in belly dance classes everywhere.

Belly dance is a suitable form of exercise for all ages and can be as physical and body types, as the participant chooses. Belly dance is a low-impact exercise which allows you to burn calories without a lot of undue stress on your joints. It is also a major weight-bearing exercise because the dancer is on their feet and moving throughout the dance. It also helps to tones the back, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdominals, pelvic floor muscles and even the arms.

Belly dance communities worldwide are noted for their energy and enthusiasm in putting on collaborative performances, workshops and other events.
